Bedford

Drawing inspiration from mid-century modern design, this Bedford kitchen renovation brings together rich walnut timber, earthy green tones and sculptural curves to create a warm and inviting space. Thoughtfully redesigned around the way the family lives, the kitchen blends timeless materials with contemporary functionality.

Re-imagined for family life

The redesign completely reworked the relationship between the kitchen, dining and living areas. Previously confined to a smaller footprint, the kitchen featured a central island and peninsula that created physical barriers and limited the flow between adjoining spaces.

The former dining area was brought into the kitchen footprint, allowing the layout to be expanded and reconfigured around the way the space is used today. The dining area was relocated, while the new island creates a central gathering point without interrupting movement through the home.

By reconsidering the footprint rather than simply replacing the existing kitchen, the redesign has created a more open, connected and functional space that makes much better use of the home as a whole.

Colour Palette

The cabinetry features Polytec Florentine Walnut, a deep chocolate-brown timber finish with warm undertones that adds texture and character throughout the kitchen.

The splashback tiles, selected by the client, add a layer of texture and handcrafted character to the kitchen. The fluted Japanese finger (or kit kat) mosaic tiles feature a glossy finish in moss and olive green tones, with hand-glazed detailing that celebrates the beauty of subtle imperfections. Their uneven surface reflects light in unique ways, creating depth, warmth and movement.

The colour combination of walnut timber and green tiles is a match made in mid-century heaven. The organic qualities of the green tones ground the space, while the deep warmth of walnut introduces richness, depth and a sense of vintage authenticity. Together, the materials create a balance between nature-inspired design and sophisticated retro influences.

Stone Benchtops

Balancing the richness of the walnut cabinetry is the Carrara Mist stone benchtop from Stone Ambassador. Designed to replicate the timeless beauty of natural Carrara marble, this surface features a crisp white base with soft grey veining that adds elegance and sophistication to the space.

The subtle movement throughout the stone introduces a refined contrast against the warmth of the timber, creating a timeless foundation that complements the kitchen’s natural textures and earthy palette.

Curved Design

One of the defining features of the kitchen is the curved island peninsula, designed to open up the space while creating a dedicated breakfast seating area for everyday living.

Replacing the previous oversized island that dominated the room, the new peninsula improves circulation and creates a more natural connection between the kitchen, living and dining areas. Extending from the cabinetry, it provides additional workspace while maintaining a sense of openness throughout the room.

The softly rounded edge introduces a sculptural element that reflects the organic forms characteristic of mid-century design. This shape is echoed in the floating shelves above the sink and beside the rangehood, which follow the same gentle curve as the peninsula. Finished in Florentine Walnut, the shelves bring warmth and practical display space to the kitchen while reinforcing the curved forms and cohesive, mid-century character of the overall design.

Hardware & Fixtures

The minimalist aesthetic is carried through with Castella Ledge Lip Pull handles in Matt Black. With a low-profile form and crisp edge detail, the handles integrate seamlessly into the cabinetry, adding a subtle contemporary contrast against the warmth of the walnut finish.

The sink and tap selections reinforce the refined, modern aesthetic. The Blanco Subline Double Undermount Sink in Silgranit Black provides a sleek, flush-mounted finish, while the Blanco Linus-S Sink Mixer in Satin Dark Steel complements the darker accents throughout the space.

Layered Lighting

Lighting was carefully considered to enhance both the functionality and atmosphere of the kitchen.

Dimmable LED strip lighting has been integrated above the main working areas and beneath all floating shelves, providing practical task lighting while creating a warm ambience in the evenings. Controlled via remote, the lighting allows the homeowners to adjust the mood of the space throughout the day.

Integrated Design Details

The rangehood has been seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry, with Florentine Walnut casing creating a cohesive connection between the overhead elements and the rest of the kitchen design.

The Euro-Cargo pull-out bin is seamlessly integrated beside the sink, providing a discreet and practical solution for waste and recycling. Featuring two separate compartments, it keeps everyday clean-up organised while maintaining the kitchen’s streamlined aesthetic. An internal drawer above offers additional storage for bin liners and cleaning essentials, ensuring these practical elements remain neatly tucked away yet easily accessible.
