Both terms refer to the functionality of your kitchen. The concept of a ‘work triangle’ has been around since the 1940s, and refers to your cooktop, sink and fridge being positioned in a triangle formation to allow for optimal functionality during food preparation. However, as we shift into a modern era we have so many more innovative kitchen solutions that simply were not available before. The kitchen work triangle may still work for smaller kitchen spaces with a traditional layout, but for more spacious kitchens, it often isn’t the best solution. Additionally, nowadays our appliances are no longer limited to just your cooktop, sink and fridge, with so many more exciting options available to us.

The term ‘work zone’ encapsulates sections of space in the kitchen which are designated for particular tasks. For example, you might have a separate work zone for your coffee station to prepare drinks, and a work zone alongside your kitchen benchtop next to the sink where all food preparation takes place. Work zones are completely customisable depending on your needs and the way you like to use your kitchen. As modern kitchens are far more spacious than what they used to be, they often account for multiple work zones within the kitchen.

Here at The Maker Designer Kitchens, functionality is a key consideration for us when designing your ideal kitchen. As innovative kitchen designers, we love to use the work zone approach, as it allows for more flexibility in creating the perfect design which will meet every single one of your needs.
