ESSENTIAL FEATURES FOR YOUR COUNTRY KITCHEN DESIGN

The country style kitchen has been a consistently popular design style over the years, originally taking their roots from a farmhouse style kitchen where family would gather after a long day around a wood-burning stove. Emanating warmth, cosiness and homeliness, a country style kitchen has some unique features that when combined set it apart from other design styles.

Timber Elements

A style that takes most of its inspiration from natural landscapes, timber cabinetry is an ideal way to bring warmth into your country style kitchen. Cabinetry is often ornate and detailed, with profile doors such as Farmer’s doors providing those intricate details with corbels and pilasters often associated with this kitchen design style. Opting for traditional timber flooring is also an effective means of creating that homestyle feeling, or alternatively a large timber dining table as the heart of the kitchen and dining area will allow the family to gather together. Exposed timber ceiling beams are also a fantastic way to bring some rustic elements into your kitchen.

Soft Colour Schemes

Whites and creams are most commonly seen in a country kitchen design, as it ties in well with timber features, and creates and open and airy impression. Colour palettes are often soft and subdued, and adding some earthier tones such as tans or beiges can help in adding some warmth into the space. In recent times there has also been an increase in more contemporary colours such as latte, which blends seamlessly with a darker granite benchtop. You can add darker accents throughout with wrought-iron detailing or dark coloured appliances.

Butler’s or farmhouse sinks

A butler’s sink (or farmhouse sink) is a nostalgic blast from the past that complements the country style kitchen perfectly. Used in the past for entertaining and cooking on a large scale, the butler’s sink is a lot deeper than a modern stainless steel sink, meaning it not only looks great but adds a very functional element when it comes to washing large pots, pans or baking trays.

Items on display

A traditional country kitchen design will incorporate design elements to showcase your individuality by displaying items such as crockery, silverware or even freshly picked flowers. This can be achieved through glass fronted cabinets or open shelving, or hooks under the shelves to hang cups or utensils. Another option is a mantel or an open plate rack, where you can show off your charming range of crockery. Displaying items is also a great way of bringing a pop of colour into the kitchen if you have opted for a more muted colour palette in the kitchen.
