KITCHEN RENOVATION GUIDE: TIPS TO HELP YOU PREPARE FOR A KITCHEN RENOVATION IN PERTH

A kitchen renovation can be one of the most rewarding home improvement projects you’ll undertake, and it can also be one of the most complex, with multiple stages and trades involved. A new kitchen, when done right, can add significant value to your property – in some cases up to double the money that was spent on the renovation itself. A kitchen renovation doesn’t have to be a stressful time though, through planning, organisation and enlisting the right help, it can be a satisfying process. Read on for our handy tips to ensure your kitchen renovation in Perth runs as smoothly as possible.

1. Design your new kitchen

Using one of The Maker’s expert kitchen designers will ensure you end up with a product you love, that fits into the space and that works in with your family and lifestyle. Our kitchen designers will come to site, work with you to recommend materials and colour selections to suit, design a kitchen to suit your wants and needs, and provide assistance and advice throughout the whole project. Spending time in the design phase and choosing quality materials will ensure you don’t have any regrets down the track and can have the added bonus of increasing your property valuation.

2. Planning for the removal and install

Once the kitchen design is signed off and ready to go, a site supervisor will be assigned to your project, and a timeline for measure, delivery and install will be put in place – which means it’s time to think about the removal of the existing cabinetry, and any structural changes that are required prior to the install of the new cabinetry. Additionally, you’ll need a qualified electrician and plumber to disconnect all your appliances, sink, tap and gas outlets prior to the removal of the old kitchen. All structural changes such as new windows or walls will need to be completed before the new cabinetry can be installed. Ensure that all trades you engage are aware and able to work to the required timeframes.

Before any work commences, make sure you’ve packed up your non-essential appliances and gadgets and store them out of the way while the renovation is underway. Keep essential items such as plates, cutlery, and a microwave in a different area of the house as a temporary kitchen. It’s also worthwhile doing some meal preparation and freezing meals ahead of time, to make it easier during the renovation. It’s always handy to have a BBQ on hand as another cooking option. The fridge will also need to be moved to another accessible room, along with removing any curtains, wall hangings or furnishings that could get damaged during the process.

3. Installing cabinets and stone benchtops

Now comes the exciting part where you can start to see your dream kitchen come to life! Your new kitchen cabinetry can be installed following the completion of any necessary structural or building work. Depending on the size of your kitchen, this can take between 1 to 3 days, with the stone benchtop following 8-10 days later. As the stone is also manufactured by The Maker, this means the timeframe can be less than other suppliers, along with a glass splashback if you have selected one.

4. Electrical, plumbing and flooring

Following the cabinetry and stone install, the electrician and plumber will need to re-attend to connect the oven, hotplate, sink, taps and dishwasher. The electrician may also need to connect any power points in the splashback.

Generally, new flooring is laid after the installation of all other components in the kitchen, as this will ensure that no damage will occur with other trades, with the exception being concrete flooring which must go down before any cabinetry is installed. The flooring will generally be laid around the kitchen cabinetry.

5. Final touches

Lastly, your brand new kitchen will likely need a new paint job following its completion! Ensure that flooring and cabinetry is adequately covered before undertaking any painting – the last thing you’d want is your gorgeous new kitchen damaged. Consider whether you will need to purchase any new kitchen appliances or gadgets, such as toasters, kettles, or crockery to match and suit your new kitchen style and have fun shopping!

It’s now time to enjoy your kitchen – use your new kitchen to have a celebratory meal with family and friends!
